The current Period. The age of humans. This time is the "current ice age", the Quaternary Glaciation.

Quaternary Period Web PagesEdit

ClassificationEdit

  • Cenozoic Era (66-0 MYA) - The current era. The age of mammals.
    • Quaternary Period (2.58-0.00 MYA) - The current Period. The age of humans. This time is the "current ice age", the Quaternary Glaciation.
      • Holocene Epoch (11.7-0 TYA) - The current epoch. The age of modern man. The current interglacial of the Quaternary Glaciation.
      • Pleistocene Epoch (2.58-0.0117 MYA) - The previous epoch. Includes the beginning of the Quaternary Glaciation, several inter-glacials, up until the beginning of the current interglacial.
    • Neogene Period (23-2.58 MYA) - Second of 3 periods of Cenozoic.
    • Paleogene Period (66-23 MYA) - Earliest part of the Cenozoic.

Climate PeriodsEdit

Note: Quaternary Period is the current "Ice Age"
Note: Glacial is a period in an Ice Age where things are colder
Note: Interglacial is a period in an Ice Age where things are warmer
Note: Stadial is a short period in an interglacial where thing are colder than usual
Note: Interstadial is a short period in an glacial where things are warmer than usual
(see also Timeline of Glaciation)

  • Huronian Ice Age - Huronian Ice Age
  • Cryogenian Ice Age - Cryogenian Ice Age
  • Andean-Saharan Ice Age - Andean-Saharan Ice Age
  • Karoo Ice Age - Karoo Ice Age
  • Quaternary Ice Age (Current Ice Age) (2.5 - 0 MYA)
    • Eemian Stage (Last interglacial before Holocene) (130-114 TYA) - Last interglacial before Holocene. Thought to have been warmer than the Holocene.
    • Last Glacial Period (110-10 TYA) - The last glacial period in the current ice age. Has several names depending on geography, including Wisconsin Glaciation.
      • Oldest Dryast (18-15 TYA)-
      • Bølling-Allerød Interstadial (last interstadial before Holocene) (14,700 to 12,700) - (Sometimes called the Allerød Oscillation for an area that the Bølling Oscillation does not occur. When it does, this period is sub-divided.) The last interstadial warming period in the last glacial period of the current ice age. The warming that preceded this caused ice sheet collapses that caused a sudden rise in ocean levels. The heat gains during this period were suddenly lost completely during the Big Freeze at the end.
      • Youngest Dryast (Big Freeze, last cold period before Holocene) (12.8 - 11.5 TYA) - Also called the Big Freeze or Youngest Dryas. Last cold period (stadial) before Holocene.
    • Holocene Epoch (Current Interglacial) (12-0 TYA) - The current epoch. The age of modern man. The current interglacial of the Quaternary Glaciation.
