A list of definitions of words for time periods.

Greek Time Words:
Arche - archaios - Beginning, Origin, Ancient

  • Archean Eon - Eon where the first preserved solid rocks have been found and microbial life first formed, prior to the oxygenation of the atmosphere. It is not known if plate tectonics were active at this time.

Eo - Eos - Dawn

  • Eoarchean Era - The first era of the Archean after the earliest rocks solidified and before the earliest life is known. The Late Heavy Bombardment during this period could have delivered the necessary components of life to Earth. Provisionally starts at 4 Billion Years ago.
  • Eocene Epoch - Second part of the Paleogene. Began with period of global warming followed by an extinction event, followed by the "dawn" of many orders of mammals. These mammals entered North America from Europe over a land bridge. Creation of south polar current caused global cooling and led to the Oligocene extinction.

Paleo - Ancient, Old, Early

Protero - Earlier, Prior

  • Proterozoic Eon (period before first complex life) - Eon where there was abundant microbial life in an oxygenated atmosphere.

Meso - Middle

Neo - New

  • Neoarchean Era - Latest era of the archean eon. Oxygenic photosynthesis first evolved in this era. This would give rise to the Oxygen Catastrophe at the end of the Eon.
  • Neoproterozoic Era - Era from which we have the first multicellular fossils.
  • Neogene Period - Second of 3 periods of Cenozoic.

Ceno- or -Cene- Kainos - New or Recent or Modern

  • Cenozoic Era - The current era. The age of mammals.
  • Holocene Epoch - The current epoch. The age of modern man. The current interglacial of the Quaternary Glaciation.
  • Pleistocene Epoch - The previous epoch. Includes the beginning of the Quaternary Glaciation, several inter-glacials, up until the beginning of the current interglacial.
  • Pliocene Epoch -
  • Miocene Epoch -
  • Oligocene Epoch -
  • Eocene Epoch - Second part of the Paleogene. Began with period of global warming followed by an extinction event, followed by the "dawn" of many orders of mammals. These mammals entered North America from Europe over a land bridge. Creation of south polar current caused global cooling and led to the Oligocene extinction.
  • Paleocene Epoch - First part of Paleogene after demise of dinosaurs. Saw an explosion of diversity of mammals, though not many of the today's types of mammals are represented in this epoch.

Greek Amount Words:
Holo - Holos - Entire or Entirely

  • Holocene Epoch - The current epoch. The age of modern man. The current interglacial of the Quaternary Glaciation.

Pleisto - Pleistos - Most or Mostly

  • Pleistocene Epoch - The previous epoch. Includes the beginning of the Quaternary Glaciation, several inter-glacials, up until the beginning of the current interglacial.

Plio - Pleion - More or Continuation

Mio - Meion - Less

Oligo - Oligos - Few

Greek Common Words:
Zoic - Zoe - Life

  • Phanerozoic Eon (Visible Life - once thought to encompass all multicellular life) - The current geological eon, and the one where abundant animal life is present.
  • Proterozoic Eon (period before first complex life) - Eon where there was abundant microbial life in an oxygenated atmosphere.
  • Paleozoic Era - Early age of the animals.
  • Mesozoic Era - "Middle life" era. Age of reptiles.
  • Cenozoic Era - The current era. The age of mammals.

Gene - Born

Unique Words:
Phanero - Visible

  • Phanerozoic Eon (Visible Life - once thought to encompass all multicellular life) - The current geological eon, and the one where abundant animal life is present.

Hades - Underworld, Hellish

  • Hadean Eon - Eon on Earth before solid land took form, essentially molton, before the earliest preserved rocks. A proposed beginning would be the impact that formed the Moon. It is believed there was no life during this time period, or, if there was, it would have lasted long and would have to reinvent itself.
